Salt and damp. West of the freeway, salt spray seizes hinges, strike plates and deadbolts within a few blocks of the beach, and the marine layer keeps wood doors damp so they swell, stick and lose their finish at the bottom rail. Sand grinds slider tracks, and drywood termites, common along the coast, work into the frames.
At the beach, salt and sand ruin hardware and tracks long before the door: stainless hardware, a cleaned track and a sealed bottom rail save most Solana Beach doors. When a door is rotted through, a new slab or prehung door is the better buy, and we tell you which on the call.
Not for a repair. Rehanging a door, rebuilding a frame, a new slab in the old frame or new hardware are ordinary repairs. Replacing an exterior door in its opening is a question we check with Solana Beach's building division before you buy the door, and an enlarged opening always takes a permit.
Older beach cottages have original doors worth keeping, and bluff-top homes have big sliders that take the wind and the sand. We rebuild frames and rehang the originals, and replace slider rollers and latches with hardware made for the salt.
Beach cottages, condos and bluff-top homes in the salt air. Hardware seizes and doors swell. We rehang and seal, replace hinges and locks with stainless and get sanded-up sliders rolling again.
The oldest neighborhood, with single-level adobe homes and original doors. We keep the original door where it can be saved, rebuild the frame and rehang it so it swings true.
Family homes with sliders, French doors and builder interior doors. We replace rollers, realign French doors and install the prehung doors you buy.
We price the repair or the install on the call, in writing, before anything is scheduled.
Shims, hinges, strikes, weatherstrip, jamb stock and the common locksets come along, so most repairs finish the day we arrive.
We measure first so you buy the right size and swing, then hang the door you bought, frame fixed first so it stays true.
The work area is cleaned before we leave, and every repair and install carries our one-year workmanship warranty.
Rehanging a door, rebuilding a frame, a new slab or new hardware are ordinary repairs that need no permit. Solana Beach asks for a permit to replace windows, and we check its rule for a new exterior door at your address before you buy one. Solana Beach has no certified local coastal program yet, so coastal permits near the bluff go through the Coastal Commission.
California's residential code wants the door between the garage and the house to be solid wood or steel at least 1-3/8 inches thick, or rated for 20 minutes, and to close and latch on its own. Many older homes have a hollow-core door there or a closer that quit; we install the right door and the closer.
Many Solana Beach condos and some neighborhoods have associations with approved styles. A repair that matches needs nothing; a new front door usually needs the form first, and we put the size, style and finish in writing for it.

Call 858-330-5590Most door repairs are priced on the call and scheduled within a few days. The truck carries hinges, strikes, weatherstrip, shims and jamb stock, so a door that sticks, sags or will not lock is usually fixed the day we arrive.
Usually in one visit. We lift the panel out, vacuum and true the track, fit new rollers made for the salt, and reset the latch so it catches. Near the beach we also swap the screws and the handle for stainless so it keeps working.
The price follows the problem: hinges and a strike are quick, a rotted frame or a new prehung door takes longer. We quote it on the call, in writing, from your description or a photo, before anything is booked. No surprises when we arrive.
Usually, yes. An original wood door can almost always be rehung, its frame rebuilt and its bottom rail repaired. In Eden Gardens and the older beach cottages we keep what is there and make it close and lock again.
We install them. You pick and buy the door, from a home center or a door shop, and we install it: we measure first so you buy the right size and swing, fix the frame, then hang, seal, trim and fit the hardware. Prehung or slab, interior or exterior, French or patio.
Yes, that is most of our installs. Tell us the size and whether it is prehung or a slab, or text a photo of the label, and we price the install on the call. If the opening needs work first, we tell you before the door arrives.
Not to repair one: rehanging, a frame rebuild, a new slab or new hardware are ordinary repairs. For a new exterior door in the old opening we check Solana Beach's rule for your address before you buy it, and a larger opening always takes a permit. We tell you which applies on the call.
