Water and time. The original village is laced with canals, and fences there stand on posts that have spent decades in damp sandy soil; termites hollow them at grade while the boards above look fine. The village code expects a wood fence to stand without sagging or tilting, with rotten wood replaced and the fence painted on both sides unless it is a wood made to weather. The fix is new posts in concrete, new boards where the rot is and a finish that matches.
Royal Palm Beach asks for a permit for fences, but a repair or replacement of less than a quarter of the permitted fence is exempt. A fence is held to four feet in front of the house and six from the front of the house back. Most repairs we do fall inside that exemption, and we tell you on the call if yours does not.
