Salt first, then the ground. Jupiter sits on the ocean, the Intracoastal and the Loxahatchee, and the salt air takes hinges, latches and rail screws within a few seasons. In the sandy soil, subterranean termites and the wet season hollow a post at grade while the boards above look fine. Then a storm leans on the weakened run. The fix is new posts in concrete, coated hardware and matched boards, not a new fence.
Jupiter's own homeowner brochure lists repairing a fence among the jobs that do not need a permit; replacing one, or building new, goes through the town's permit process with a survey and a notarized fence certification. A front-yard fence is held to four feet and a side or rear fence to six. Jupiter Farms and Tequesta are not the town and have their own rules.
