Carmel Valley is younger than most of San Diego, built from the late 1980s on, so its fences fail the way builder fences do: posts set shallow and watered by irrigation ever since, rail screws that back out of pressure-treated wood as it dries, gates that were never hung quite square. The marine layer keeps the posts damp in the morning and the sun splits the boards in the afternoon. The fix is a deeper post in fresh concrete and matched boards, not a new fence.
