Most of Walnut Creek sits on clay that swells through the winter rain and shrinks through the dry summer, and the house rides it: a little lift at the slab edge by February, a little drop by September. The drywall shows it where the sheets were cut, at the top corners of doors, windows and sliders, worst in the Northgate and Rancho San Miguel two-stories on the bigger lots.
