How to Patch Drywall: The Right Way, By Hole Size

Small holes: nails, screws, anchors

The easy ones. Pull the anchor or nail, dab lightweight spackle with a putty knife, let it dry, sand flush, touch up paint. Two thin passes beat one thick one, and primer over the spackle keeps the touch-up from flashing shiny. Total confidence level: everyone.

Medium holes: the doorknob class

Up to fist-sized, this is the California patch or a mesh patch kit. For mesh: stick the patch over the hole, skim two or three thin coats of joint compound, feathering wider each pass, sand between coats, prime and paint. For the California patch: cut a drywall square two inches oversize, snap off the back of the border leaving the paper flange, butter the edges and bed it in the hole. Stronger than mesh, no kit required, and deeply satisfying when it works.

Large holes: bigger than your hand

Now it is carpentry. The patch needs backing, wood strips or cut back to studs, a squared opening, a new piece of board, tape on every seam, and three coats. This is also where DIY repairs start to sag, crack at the seams, or telegraph through paint. It is honest work to do yourself if you have the patience, and it is exactly the job we finish to invisible every day if you do not.

The boss level: texture

Here is the secret the tutorials skip: the patch is the easy part. The texture is the repair. Orange peel, knockdown, hand trowel, every wall has a fingerprint, and a flat-sanded patch on a textured wall shows forever, in every raking light, no matter how good the paint is. Matching texture takes the right hopper, the right mix and practiced hands. It is the single most common reason people call us after a weekend of doing everything else right.
