Slope and rain. Happy Valley is built on the flanks of old volcanic buttes, so most back fences run up or down a hill or sit on a retaining wall. Nearly all of the year's rain falls between October and May, the posts rot at the ground line, and one weak post lets a run rack downhill. The fix is a deeper post in fresh concrete, a re-plumbed run and matched cedar, not a new fence.
Not for a repair. Happy Valley allows a fence up to eight feet behind the front of the house and four feet in front, and asks for a building permit only at seven feet and up. A like-for-like repair changes nothing, and we check before building anything new.
Reset posts and matching pickets fix most fences for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and that is the work we do. Whole-fence replacement, vinyl and iron are not our lane. If that is what the fence needs, we say so on the call, and we still fix the gate and the sections that can be saved.

Its code allows a fence up to eight feet behind the front of the house or more than 30 feet back, and four feet in front, with fences in a clear vision area held to two and a half feet.
